 THE DOCTRINE AND PRACTICE of indulgences in the Church is closely linked to the effects of the Sacrament of Penance.  An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions or Christ and the saints.  An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin.  Indulgences may be applied to the living (yourself) or the dead. – Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1471

How to pray for the holy souls in purgatory – Catholic Digest

FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY:  A partial indulgence, applicable to the souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even for a few minutes.  The indulgence is plenary each day from the first to the eighth of November.  Take advantage of this special opportunity during the month of November to earn indulgences for the souls in Purgatory.

1. A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who on the day dedicated to the Commemoration of all the faithful departed piously visit a church, a public oratory or – for those entitled to use it – a semipublic oratory.

The above indulgence can be acquired either on the day designated above or, with the consent of the Ordinary, on the preceding or following Sunday or the feast of All Saints.

In visiting the church or oratory, it is required according to Norm 6 of the same Apostolic Constitution, that “one Our Father and the Creed be recited.”

2. An indulgence, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, is granted to the faithful, who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even if only mentally, for the departed.  The indulgence is plenary each day from the 1st to the 8th of November; on other days of the year it is partial.

3. Deserving of special mention are the following works for anyone of which the faithful can gain a plenary indulgence for the souls in Purgatory any day of the year (or the indulgence may be gained once a day for oneself).

A.  Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for at least one half hour.

B.  Devout reading of the sacred Scriptures for at least one half hour.

C.  Making the Way of the Cross.

D.  The praying of the Rosary in a church or in public.

The conditions prescribed by the Church for gaining a plenary indulgence are:  the pious act, (i.e., visiting the cemetery) or prayer, (i.e., the Rosary, etc.), Confession and Communion within eight days before or after the intention of gaining the plenary indulgence; and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father, e.g., Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. – Enchiridion of Indulgences Norms and Grants – Pope Paul VI, 1969

Why Do We Celebrate All Saints’ Day?

All Saints’ Day was created to commemorate every last individual in heaven, even those whose salvation is known to God alone.  So if your departed grandmother is in heaven, even though she’s never been canonized, on All Saints’ Day, the Catholic Church commemorates her and the work God did in her life. She, too, has a place in the liturgical calendar, alongside the more famous saints.

Precisely when that day occurs will depend which liturgical calendar you are using. In many Eastern Catholic churches, the commemoration of all the saints is held on the Sunday after Pentecost, which has a certain logic, since Pentecost was the event that led to the evangelization of the world and the salvation of so many souls.

In the West, November 1 became the date on which all the saints are commemorated. Sometimes people will try to tarnish this with pagan associations, claiming that it was based on the Gaelic holiday Samhain, as celebrated in the British Isles.

But All Saints’ Day didn’t originate in the British Isles. The reason November 1 was picked is that Pope Gregory III (731-741) dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to all the saints and fixed its anniversary as November 1.

Later, Pope Gregory IV (827-844) extended this celebration to the whole of the Western Church. This led to the commemoration of the evening before as All Hallows Eve, and it led to the following day—November 2—being celebrated as All Souls Day, when we pray for all the souls who are still being purified on their way to heaven.

Though we disagree about various matters, both Catholics and Protestants say the Apostles’ Creed, and when we do so, we profess belief in “the communion of saints.” The celebration of All Saints’ Day is one of the ways Catholics live out this profession.

All Saints’ Day came to be a very important liturgical day, and today it is a holy day of obligation, meaning that Catholics must observe it by going to Mass, as they do on Sundays. This makes All Saints different from the commemorations of individual saints. None of the saints living after biblical times is commemorated with holy days of obligation. However famous saints like Augustine, Aquinas, and Thérèse of Lisieux may be, they don’t have such an important day on the liturgical calendar.  But the whole body of the saints in heaven—sainted grandmothers included—do. The Catholic Church thus not only remembers individual saints; it takes seriously its profession of the entire communion of saints.

will burn this week in loving memory of

Robert Murphy

At the request of John & Carolyn Crumley

VESPERS:  Join us for Vespers on Sunday evenings at 5:00 pm.  Booklets are provided.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 16th is the feat of St. Jadwiga, the Polish Queen (1174-1243) Queen Jadwiga and her husband built a number of monasteries and churches and both lived a holy life.   At the news of her husband’s death the nuns all shed tears but St. Jadwiga comforted the Sisters by saying, “Would you oppose the Will of God?  Our lives are His.  Our will is whatever He is pleased to ordain, whether our own death or that of our friends.”   From that time on she took the habit and lived as a simple nun using her great wealth for the relief of the poor and suffering.  The tomb of Jadwiga, at the Convent in Trzebnica, Poland is the site of many miracles to this day. It is interesting to note that Pope Saint John Paul II, the first Polish Pope in history was elected on the feast of St. Jadwiga, the Polish Queen.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 16th is also the feast of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was favored with a number of visions of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Her writings spurred by the apparitions helped free the Church from the spirit of Jansenism and helped focus Christianity on the great love of God.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18th is the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist whose writings in Scripture speak of God’s mercy, universal salvation, love of the poor and prayer.  He is the Patron Saint of artists and the legendary painter of the icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa.  He will be remembered in the Mass at 8:00 a.m.

PLEASE NOTE: THE MASS ON WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 18TH WILL BE AT 8:00 AM.  THERE WILL BE NO MASS AT 5:30 PM

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19th is the Fest of the American martyrs, St. Isaac Jogues, St. John de Brébeuf and Companions.  These men were missionaries to the Huron and Iroquois of North America.  St. Isaac Jogues was martyred in Auriesville, New York.  The blood of these martyrs has nurtured the Faith in this new land.  They will be remembered in the Mass at 5:30 p.m.  This Mass is subject to a cancellation.  Please call the Rectory on Thursday to confirm whether it will be offered.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20th is the Feast of St. Paul of the Cross.  Born in northern Italy in 1694. After a brief time as a soldier, he turned to solitary prayer, developing a devotion to Christ’s passion..  In 1720, Paul founded the Congregation of the Passion, whose members combined devotion to Christ’s passion with preaching to the poor, and rigorous penances. Known as the Passionists, they add a fourth vow to the traditional three of poverty, chastity, and obedience, to spread the memory of Christ’s passion among the faithful. Paul of the Cross died in 1775, and was canonized in 1867.

PRAY FOR VOCATIONS to the Priesthood from our Parish and for our Parish so that we might always have a Priest here to celebrate the Mass and administer the Holy Sacraments!  Please join in the Divine Mercy Chaplet to pray for vocations to the priesthood every Friday at 4:45 p.m

PRAY FOR OUR CLERGY: Please join us in dedicating every day to one of the clergymen designated in our calendar.

THE THIRD ORDER OF MOUNT CARMEL will meet on Saturday,October 28th  following the 8:00 a.m. Mass.  What is a Carmelite?  Some of the most famous saints of the Church were Carmelites.  They include St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Thérèse of Lisieux and Sister Lucia of Fatima, one of the three shepherds to who Our Lady of Fatima appeared.  The name “Carmelite” derives from Mount Carmel. The full name of the order is “The Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.”  The order was founded in Palestine about 1154 and claims continuity with the hermits who lived on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, from ancient times even as far back as to the prophet Elijah of the Old Testament.  All interested are welcome to attend.

THE PRO-LIFE NOVENA will continue on Saturday, October 21st before the 8:00 a.m. Mass.  All are welcome to pray in supplication for an end to the violence of abortion and in reparation for our lack of love which makes abortion acceptable in our nation.

15 PROMISES OF MARY

TO THOSE WHO RECITE THE ROSARY

Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary — Passionist Nuns

The benefits of what Pope St. John Paul II called “an exquisitely contemplative prayer” were enumerated in a special way by a 15th century Dominican friar. According to the tradition, Alanus de Rupe received the following 15 promises to those who pray the Rosary devoutly from the Blessed Virgin Mary herself through a private revelation. We hope that they encourage you in meditating on the mysteries of Christ by praying the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

1. Those who faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces.

2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.

3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell. It will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.

4. The recitation of the Rosary will cause virtue and good works to flourish. It will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God. It will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.

5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary shall not perish.

6. Those who recite my Rosary devoutly, applying themselves to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. In His justice, God will not chastise them; nor shall they perish by an unprovided death, i.e., be unprepared for heaven. Sinners shall convert. The just shall persevere in grace and become worthy of eternal life.

7. Those who have a true devotion to the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.

8. Those who faithfully recite the Rosary shall have, during their life and at their death, the light of God and the plenitude of His graces. At the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.

9. I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.

10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven.

11. By the recitation of the Rosary you shall obtain all that you ask of me.

12. Those who propagate the holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.

13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of their death.

14. All who recite the Rosary are my beloved children and the brothers and sisters of my only Son, Jesus Christ.

15. Devotion for my Rosary is a great sign of predestination

THE SANCTUARY LAMP

will burn this week in loving memory of

At the request of Shirley

OCTOBER 10th MARKS THE DEATH of Blessed Mother Mary Angela, the foundress of the Felician Sisters.  Before founding her order of nuns Mother Angela was known as Sophia Camilla Truszkowska.  Although from a well-to-do family, she lived a simple life of work, study and prayer. Throughout her life Mother Angela dedicated all her activities to Our Lady of Czestochowa.  No project was ever taken without first asking Our Lady to bless it and guide it to a Divine fulfillment.  Her advice to her nuns was always to work and pray.  Her admonition to the Felician Sisters was, “you have not entered the convent to be served, but to serve.” Mother Angela balanced this life of service with prayer and contemplation, a concept of a balanced and ordered life directed in all things to God as the very cause, the very heart and the very center of their existence!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11th is the feast of Pope John XXIII was elected Pope on October 28, 1958. He died June 3, 1963 in Rome and was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 3, 2000.  He served as a military chaplain during the First World War.  During the Second World War he used his diplomatic means to save as many Jews as he could by obtaining safe passage for them. As Pope, however he convoked the Second Vatican Council, which he opened on October 11, 1962. Pope John’s spirit of humble simplicity, profound goodness, and deep life of prayer radiated in all that he did, and inspired people to affectionately call him “Good Pope John.” He was canonized by Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square on April 27, 2014, alongside the man who beatified him, Pope St. John Paul II

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14th is the Feast of Pope St. Callistus I who was an early Christian Pope and gave his life for the Faith.  He will be remembered in the Mass at 5:30 p.m.

OUR LADY’S HOLY ICON will visit the home of Kathy Eichorn for a week of prayer and petition for the needs of our Parish.  We thank you for this holy work of power and love.

THE PILGRIM STATUE OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA is touring the Turners Falls & Greenfield on October 11th from 2 hour devotional visits from 10am – 12pm and 6 pm to 8 pm. For more information, you can call Hannah at 785-584-1103 or Eugenia Doucette at 785-584-1106.  Countless graces have been attributed to this devotion.

THE MASS BOOK FOR 2024 is now ready for those who like to book their church or mission Masses in advance.  To have a Mass said for a loved one is a beautiful prayer for their souls.  At Our Lady of Czestochowa, you have an opportunity to have a Mass said at the church or sent to the missions.  Both Mass types are published in the bulletin every week.  You may send in requests for Masses by mail or by dropping your requests in the collection basket.  You may also call in a Mass to the rectory—if no one is in the office you may leave a message.  When requesting a Mass, please record the type of Mass you want (church or mission), if you want a specific date or time, write out the name/names clearly, indicate who the Mass is from, and finally the money.   The basic stipend is $10 for a church Mass and $5 for a mission Mass.  Please note that with many different people counting the collection monies, sometimes a Mass request gets into the wrong account because it is not clear where the money or request belongs, so, if you drop your Mass request or Mass payment in the collection basket, please make sure it is in an envelope, and the envelope states that it is for Masses.

THE FOLLOWING MASS INTENTIONS have been sent to various Missionaries.  They will be offered as follows and you may unite your prayers to the Missionaries who offer the Masses in their churches:

How to Pray the Rosary, Prayer of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Excerpt from:  THE SECRET OF THE ROSARY

By St. Louis de Montfort

Meditation on the Mysteries of the Rosary is a great means of perfection.

The saints made our Lord’s life the principal object of their study; they meditated on his virtues and his sufferings, and in this way arrived at Christian perfection. Saint Bernard began with this meditation and he always kept it up. “At the very beginning of my conversion,” he said, “I made a bouquet of myrrh fashioned from the sorrows of my Saviour. I placed this bouquet upon my heart, thinking of the lashes, the thorns and the nails of his passion. I applied my whole mind to the meditation on these mysteries every day.”

This was also the practice of the holy martyrs; we admire how they triumphed over the most cruel sufferings. Where could this admirable constancy of the martyrs come from, says Saint Bernard, if not from the wounds of Jesus Christ, on which they meditated so frequently? Where was the soul of these generous athletes when their blood gushed forth and their bodies were wracked with cruel torments? Their soul was in the wounds of Christ and those wounds made them invincible.”

During her whole life, our Saviour’s holy Mother was occupied in meditating on the virtues and the sufferings of her Son. When she heard the angels sing their hymn of joy at his birth and saw the shepherds adore him in the stable, her heart was filled with wonder and she meditated on all these marvels. She compared the greatness of the Word incarnate to the way he humbled himself in this lowly fashion; the straw of the crib, to his throne in the heart of his Father; the might of God, to the weakness of a child; his wisdom, to his simplicity.

Our Lady said to Saint Bridget one day, “Whenever I used to contemplate the beauty, modesty, and wisdom of my Son, my heart was filled with joy; and whenever I considered his hands and feet which would be pierced with cruel nails, I wept bitterly and my heart was rent with sorrow and pain.”  After our Lord’s Ascension, our Blessed Lady spent the rest of her life visiting the places that had been hallowed by his presence and by his sufferings. There, she meditated on his boundless love and on his terrible passion.

Saint Mary Magdalene continually performed the same religious exercises during the last thirty years of her life, when she lived at Sainte-Baume. Saint Jerome tells us that this was the devotion of the faithful in the early centuries of the Church. From all the countries of the world they came to the Holy Land to engrave more deeply on their hearts a great love and remembrance of the Saviour of mankind by seeing the places and things he had made holy by his birth, his work, his sufferings, and his death.

All Christians have but one faith and adore one and the same God, and hope for the same happiness in heaven; they know only one mediator, who is Jesus Christ; all must imitate their divine model, and in order to do this they must meditate on the mysteries of his life, of his virtues and of his glory.

It is a great mistake to think that only priests and religious and those who have withdrawn from the turmoil of the world are supposed to meditate upon the truths of our faith and the mysteries of the life of Christ.

If priests and religious have an obligation to meditate on the great truths of our holy religion in order to live up to their vocation worthily, the same obligation is just as much incumbent on the laity, because of the fact that every day they meet with spiritual dangers which might cause them to lose their souls. Therefore, they should arm themselves with the frequent meditation on the life, virtues, and sufferings of our Blessed Lord, which are presented to us in the fifteen mysteries of the holy Rosary.

What is Vatican II?

OUR FATHER

Pater noster, qui es in caelis,

Sanctificetur Nomen Tuum;
Adveniat Regnum Tuum;
Fiat voluntas Tua,
Sicut in caelo, et in terra.
Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie;
Et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
Sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris;
Et ne nos inducas in tentationem;
Sed libera nos a Malo. Amen.

Prayer Before Communion

O God, be merciful to me, a sinner. O God, cleanse me of my sins and forgive me for I have sinned without number.

Eternal rest grant unto them o Lord,

And Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them
