Prayer for Priests
O Jesus, Eternal Priest, look down with love upon Thy priests. Fill them with burning zeal for the conversion of sinners. Keep them within the shelter of Thy Sacred Heart. Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Thy Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips purpled with Thy Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts sealed with the sublime marks of Thy Glorious Priesthood. Let Thy holy love protect them from the world’s contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit, and may the souls to whom they minister on earth be one day their joy and consolation in Heaven. Amen.
MONDAY, APRIL 8th WILL CELEBRATE THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD
Normally celebrated on March 25th, the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord which celebrates the Word made flesh has been moved to April 8th this year because it occurred during Holy Week. This miracle of love when God became man will be remembered in the Mass at 8:00 am. One of the astronauts walking on the moon remarked that his thoughts were, “What a great miracle than man walked on the moon.” He said immediately he was struck by the thought, “No, a greater miracle was when God as a man walked upon the earth.” When the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would bear a son, the Messiah, the Savior of the world, and she accepted, that is the greatest miracle, the miracle of God’s love for us.

LITURGICAL NOTES: The Second Sunday of Easter is the last day of the Octave of Easter—the extended celebration of an important Feast over the following week. While this Sunday has been given the title “Divine Mercy Sunday”, it is important to note that this devotion does not impede on the liturgically character of this Sunday, which is distinctivly Baptismal. This can be seen in the traditional Entrance Chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes (Like newborn infants), which addresses the neophytes (the newly baptised) and bids them to a deeper understanding of the Faith and the life of the Sacraments—indeed, this exhortation from the First Letter of St. Peter is addressed to all of us, since we are all in a state of spiritual infancy in this life. (As an aside, the titular character from Victor Hugo’s popular novel The Huchback of Notre Dame was given the name ‘Quasimodo’ because the Archdeacon of the Cathedral found him on the steps of the Cathedral on this Sunday.)
This Baptismal theme is continued in the Collect of the Mass: God of everlasting mercy, who in the very recurrence of the paschal feast kindle the faith of the people you have made your own, increase, we pray, the grace you have bestowed, that all may grasp and rightly understand in what font they have been reborn, by whose Blood they have been redeemed; and in the Prayer over the Offerings: Accept, O Lord, we pray, the oblations of your people (and of those you have brought to new birth) that, renewed by confession of your name and by Baptism, they may attain unending happiness. In fact, another traditional name for this day is Dominia in Albis Deponendis (or Dispositis), that is, The Sunday of setting aside the White Garment, referring to the white robes of the newly baptized, which would be worn liturgically from the Easter Vigil until this Sunday.
The Entrance Chant from the Graduale Simplex, sung at the 10:30 Mass (the Introit Quasimodo will be sung as a prelude before the procession at this Mass), is an ancient processional Chant for Paschaltide, to which has been added a verse from Psalm cxviii (cxvii), the traditional Psalm for Eastertide. This chant, which is also used on Easter Sunday in the Graduale Simplex, extends the festal character of Easter Sunday to the Octave Day. The Offertory Chant is taken from the account of the meeting between the women and the angel at the empty tomb, as found in the Gospel of Matthew, which, again, links this day with the previous Sunday’s solemnity, while the Communion Chant is taken directly from today’s Gospel.
While we reflect this day on the Mercy of God (which cannot, by the very nature of Mercy, be divorced from God’s Justice: Mercy without Justice is mere license), we should ponder this truth within the context of the Paschal Mystery—the Passion and Resurrection of Christ—which is celebrated* in every Mass, but especially in Eastertide as we rejoice with the newly baptised, and renew our own baptismal commitment. Let us today give thanks for God’s great Mercy to us in giving us through His Son the Church and the sacraments, since it is through Baptism that we are joined to the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church, outside of which salvation is impossible, since a member cut off from the Body can only wither and die; and since it is through the other sacraments that we are given the pure spiritual milk that nourishes our souls that we may grow to salvation (cf. I Peter ii: 2, Entrance Chant, Quasimodo geniti infants). As we celebrate this great mysical Eighth Day of the re-creation and restoration of fallen humanity, a day celebrated on each Sunday of the Liturgical Year, let us always remember: This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it (cf. Psalm cxviii (cxvii): 24, Entrance Chant of the Graduale Simplex).
* In liturgical studies the term celebrate/celebration is a technical term (from the Latin), that has a different connotation than it does in vernacular English. Within the technical-liturgical context, it refers both to the commemoration of a mystery of the faith and also the “carrying out”, the performance and administration of the solemn, public Liturgy of the Church. Some object to this term, being only familiar with its use within vernacular English as a synonym for “party”, but this term has always been used in the Church for the “carrying out” of the Mass: for example, in the 1570 Missale Romanum, the so-called Tridentine Missal, the code of rubrics for the Mass was called Ritus Servandus in Celebratione Missae : The Rites to be Observed in the Celebration of the Mass. So we do indeed celebrate (i.e., commemorate) the Passion on Good Friday; and we do indeed celebrate (officially, and publicly administer and perform) the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass; etc. It is unfortunate that the use of this word, directly translated from Latin, has caused such a tremendous deformation of the Sacred Liturgy in the English-speaking world, the result of poor liturgical catechesis among the clergy and others in the Church with responsibility in liturgical matters.
Beacon of Faith Campaign Prayer
Heavenly Father,
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, all things are possible
and without Him we can do nothing.
May we seek Your kingdom above all, knowing that all things
work together for the good of those who love You
and are called according to Your purpose.
Grant us that we, united through Your Son in one faith
and by the strength of the Holy Spirit, may be generous in our support
of the Beacon of Faith Campaign
which seeks to strengthen parish life in the four counties of our diocese.
All this we pray through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Eternal rest grant unto them o Lord,
And Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them
