Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, Eternal Priest, look down with love upon Thy priests. Fill them with burning zeal for the conversion of sinners. Keep them within the shelter of Thy Sacred Heart. Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Thy Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips purpled with Thy Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts sealed with the sublime marks of Thy Glorious Priesthood. Let Thy holy love protect them from the world’s contagion. Bles their labors with abundant fruit, and may the souls to whom they minister on earth be one day their joy and consolation in Heaven. Amen.

LITURGICAL NOTES:  This Sunday, the Third Sunday of Easter, the Church gives many options for the Communtion Chant in the Graduale Romanum, Roman Missal, and Graduale Simplex.  The Chant sung at the 4:00 & 8:00 Masses is the Option for Year B (the current Year of the Lectionary) in the Roman Missal: the text is taken from today’s Gospel.  At the 10:30 Mass, the Latin Communion Chant is the Option for Year B from the Graduale Romanum, which is a passage from Psalm 95 (96); while the English Chant is the text from the Roman Missal that is given for all three Years (ABC) of the Lectionary: the text is the conclusion of the Gospel for this Sunday in Year A (Luke xxiv: 13–35), and the beginning of today’s Gospel (Year B: Luke xxiv: 35–48).

The Entrance Chant sung at the 10:30 Mass is the Seasonal Chant from the Graduale Simplex, and is used from after the Octave of Easter until the Ascension of the Lord.

STAY WITH US

Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene

Meet the Stranger in the Road

God has made us for Himself, and we cannot live without Him; we need Him, we hunger and thirst for Him; He is the only One who can satisfy our hearts.  The Easter Liturgy is impregnated with this longing for God, for Him who is from on high; it even makes it the distinctive sign of our participation in the Paschal mystery.  “If you be risen with/Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God; mind the things that are above, not the things that are upon the earth.” (Col 3, 1.2.).

The more the soul revives itself in the Resurrection of Christ, the more it feels the need of God and of heavenly truths; it detaches itself more and more from earthly things to turn toward those of heaven.

Just as physical hunger is an indication of a living, healthy organism, so spiritual hunger is a sign of a robust spirit, one that is active and continually developing.  The soul which feels no hunger for God, no need to seek Him and to find Him, and which does not vibrate or suffer with anxiety in its search, does not bear within itself the signs of the Resurrection.  It is a dead soul, or at least one which has been weakened and rendered insensible by lukewarmness.

The Paschal allelulia is a cry of triumph at Christ’s Resurrection, but at the same time, it is an urgent invitation for us to rise also.  Like the sound of reveille, it calls us to the battles of the spirit, and invites us to rouse and renew ourselves, to participate even more profoundly in Christ’s Resurrection.  Who can say, however advanced he may be in the ways of the spirit, that he has wholly attained to his resurrection.

We read in today’s Gospel the very beautiful story of the disciples at Emmaus.  Here we find the earnest supplication: “Stay with us, because it is toward evening, and the day is not far spent.”

Stay with us, Lord! It is the cry of the soul who has found its God and never again wishes to be separated from Him.  Let us too, as the disciples at Emmaus, go in search of the Lord.  Our whole life is a continuous journey toward Him, and we are often sad, even as they were, because we do not succeed in finding Him because, not understanding His mysterious ways, it seems that He has abandoned us.  “We hoped that it was He that should have redeemed Israel… but…”, said the two disciples, frustrated by the death of Jesus, and not perceiving that Jesus, at the very moment when they were about to relinquish all hope, was there close to them, disguised as their fellow traveller.

We have often shared this experience of Him.  Hidden in the obscurity of faith, God draws near our soul, makes Himself our traveling companion, and still more, lives in us by grace.  It is true that here below He does not reveal Himself in the clarity of the “face to face” vision which is reserved for eternity; we see Him only as “through a glass in a dark manner”, not outside itself, but within itself, living and acting in its heart, cannot fail to direct to Him the cry: “Stay with me!”

Yet this cry is already heard, it is already a permanent reality, because God always dwells with a soul in the state of grace.  God is always with us, even when we do not feel Him, even when we do not notice His presence.  God is there, God remains with us; it is for us to remain with Him.  If at certain moments He permits Himself to be recognized by our soul, He does so just to invite us to dwell with Him in His intimacy.  Let us, therefore, beg Him ardently:  teach us O Lord, to stay with You, to live with You.

LAND OF PEACE RELIGIOUS GOODS SALE TO HELP FAMILIES IN THE HOLY LAND:  Next weekend, April 20 and 21st we will once again welcome our brothers and sisters representing the Land of Peace mission, a non-profit organization who will speak to us about the Christian situation in the Holy Land and the Holy Land Pilgrimages.  They will be selling Crucifixes, religious art work, and rosaries – all made of olive wood which is native to Israel and Bethlehem.  Since tourism has greatly depleted, Christian families in the holy land, who depend on tourists, have been greatly affected.  The goal of this mission is to help the poor and needy families of Bethlehem and Jerusalem.  Sale of these goods will help them very much and also give you the opportunity to have “something” authentic from the holy land.  Please browse and buy some articles.  It is for a good cause and will help you in your personal devotion.

BEACON OF FAITH CAMPAIGN – Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with our Beacon of Faith Campaign receptions, and thank you to all who attended and have already made generous donations and pledges!  We are well on our way to reaching our goal!  Please note that there will be more information coming at Masses for those who were not able to attend the Receptions.  For those who would like to appropriate part of your donation to a specific purpose (i.e. Vocations, Priest Retirement Fund), please indicate that on your pledge card and also, please remember to also indicate that 50% of your donation will still go to the Parish.  If you have already sent in your pledge and you did not indicate this but would like to, please call the Rectory.  Thank you, again, for your generous support!

CEMETERY NEWS – Spring is here and so we will be, once again, working hard to keep our cemetery looking pristine.  Please be sure to remove any pots with dead arrangements that you place in front of headstones.  Our cemetery will be mowed every other week this Season to help defray rising costs. Spring clean-up will occur later this month and mowing will begin in Mid-May.

Beacon of Faith Campaign Prayer

Heavenly Father,

through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, all things are possible

and without Him we can do nothing.

May we seek Your kingdom above all, knowing that all things

work together for the good of those who love You

and are called according to Your purpose.

Grant us that we, united through Your Son in one faith

and by the strength of the Holy Spirit, may be generous in our support

of the Beacon of Faith Campaign

which seeks to strengthen parish life in the four counties of our diocese.

All this we pray through Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto them o Lord,

And Let Perpetual Light Shine Upon Them
